With the indoor season coming to an end, the Adam Sanford Classic at the Armory was a great way for UCCTF to finish with a bang. The world famous track did not disappoint, as the squad performed incredibly well across the board.
The sprints started extremely well, as expected, with the 60m. Alanna Smith ran a new personal and club best of 8.07 seconds in the heats, and April Davis and Kayla Smith followed suit by making the final. In that final, K. Smith was the standout performer, matching the previous club record of 8.10 seconds. Ian Lizzano also made his way onto the club records sheet, running a 7.17 second clocking that places him third all-time. Jon Garcia also made the final, running 7.22 seconds in both of his runs.
Nick ‘the postman’ Sivo was at it again, lighting up the Armory after a hamstring twinge that saw him miss the meet at Harvard last weekend. In the 400m, he clocked in at a sizzling 49.88 seconds. He is now
officially a sub-50 athlete in a UCCTF singlet. Unsurprisingly, this took top spot on the club records list. He also took another club record in the 200m, as he ran a very impressive 22.33 second clocking. President Joe Rychwalski was not far behind, with a 22.71 second effort. Those two will have a battle this year as the club transitions into the outdoor season.
The star of the show for the women's 200/400 group was MJ Devivo. Devivo ran a 61.56 second 400m, which was another club record for the team. She followed that up with a 26.92 second clocking in the 200m, which places her second all time. A. Smith was the fastest 200m UCCTF athlete of the day, however, finishing at 26.90 seconds. This was made all the more impressive due to the fact that she was running on her own for the heat.
For the middle distance squad, there was a complete re-writing of the club records in the mile. Owen Wollenberg finished with a club and meeting record, clocking in at 4:17.92. This was over ten seconds ahead of the second finishing athlete. Andrew White (4:36.93) and Owen Corbett (4:38.54) also ran very well as RunUC continue to be a valuable asset on the track. On the women’s side, Emma Slavin smashed the previous club record, finishing at 5:10.41. Veranika Hryn also finished well in a time of 5:56.45. This was a huge personal best, and a great mark to improve on as she transitions into the outdoor season. Kosta Boskovic also ran a fantastic personal best of 2:05.67 in the 800m. New shoes: new personal best for the middle distance chair.
The field events were somewhat marred by the fact that there were limited events available for our female athletes. Despite putting pressure on the meet organisers to change this, we were forced to settle for a male field contingent. One of the few events that did go ahead was the long jump, where April Davis finished with a new personal best of 4.71m, bringing her closer to the club record that has stood since 2018. In the men’s long jump, Lizzano (6.41m) and Max Raha (6.24m) both cleared the six meter mark, with Christo Jamo knocking on the door at 5.95m.
In the shot put, the men put on a show. Raymond Lara threw a gargantuan 13.14 meeting record, which was just short of his club record mark. Colton Lavoie also cleared the 12 meter mark, and he will be looking to break the 13 meter barrier this outdoor season. Jacob O’Reilly gained the bragging rights for finishing third, throwing 11.73 meters.
Overall, the Adam Sanford Classic was a fantastic way to finish the indoor season, and showed signs of what an outdoor season is to come. UCCTF is only growing in power and depth, with athletes outperforming themselves left, right, and center. Watch this space, as the club records will only continue to fall as the outdoor season begins.
