As expected, UCONN Club Track and Field started its 2023 campaign with a bang. Coming off of winter break is never easy for a club athletics team, but the number of PRs achieved is certainly something to write home about.
Stealing the show on the men’s field side were the weight throwers. The quartet of Raymond Lara (10.56m), Colton Lavoie (10.11m), Dan McKeon (5.70m), and Alex Gould (10.85m) all managed to secure PRs. Alex Gould was also able to take home the new club record, adding more celebration to what was a fantastic showing. Ray and Colton will be breathing down his neck, however, so do not be surprised if this record falls in the near future.
In the shot put, there were also PRs littered throughout. Dan McKeon (8.29m) secured his second PR of the day, and was joined by Sloan Gubner (8.03m) and Dante Gigliotti (9.98m). On the women’s side, Caroline Hegi (6.71m) threw well in her first ever throwing competition, earning herself 13th place overall.
In the jumps contingent, Tyler Doiron stole headlines once again as he had great showings in the high (1.90m) and triple jumps. His mark of 13.61m extended his Club Record, and also shows signs of a breakout season for the star jumper. April Davis was unlucky to come away without a PR, as she jumped well in both the Long Jump (4.37m) and the Triple Jump (9.73m).
On the track, there were both highs and lows. In the 60m, Hampton Cobb (7.27) and Alanna Smith (8.19) both made their respective finals, and bettered their marks from the heats. Justin Carroll (7.87) also broke the eight second barrier for the first time, which was great to witness so early in the season. In the 300m, Celestine Walliser (46.35) had a great first outing at that distance, while John Gulish ran a stellar 36.68 for a massive PR.
In the distance contingent, Giuliana Vinces broke the club record in the 600m with a 1:57.06 clocking, as well as a 3:33.09 in the 1,000m.
The jewel in the crown of the track contingent came in the very last event: the 4x220yd relay. The female squad of Ava Buckmir, Alanna Smith, Kayla Smith and MJ DeVivo ran a breathtaking 1:50.68. This shatters the previous club record by over six seconds. The record has stood since 2016. A special mention should also go to Kayla Smith for producing an untouchable split of 25.77.
In the men’s side, the quartet of Ameen Parks, Jon Garcia, Oscar Frost, and Joe Rychwalski also managed to break the previous club record in this event with a converted time of 1:32.55. With the opposition nowhere in sight, it was a dominant way to end a dominant day for UCCTF.
Despite a small group voyaging to ‘The Track’ next weekend, the majority of the club has a couple of weeks to recover before taking to the oval again on Feb 11th at the New Balance Boston Open.
