UCONN Club Track prepare for the first meet in Boston...
After a long summer recess, the UCONN Club Track & Field team is back on the track next weekend at Boston University for the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Competing against strong college team outfits is not new to UCCTF, and this meet will be no different. Racing against strong Division One talent, the athletes will look to prove how hard they have worked this winter, and to set the season off on a good tone.
There will be 42 women’s performances, and 90 men’s performances, showing the depth in UCCTF’s squad. Catering for performance athletes and the more casual ones, the club will go to BU as one of the most inclusive and varied squads.
The field athletes will take to the stage first, ensuring an action-packed start to the day. There are chances for club records in almost every field event, with some freshmen hoping to put their name up in lights competing for UCONN for the first time.
The men’s shot put will be particularly exciting, with current record holder Colton Lavoie and freshman Raymond Lara battling it out after pushing each other in the off-season. With 16 UCCTF men competing in the shot put, however, a surprise result could come from any angle. Women’s record holder Clarissa Nock will also be looking to improve her personal best of 12.55m. April Davis (Triple Jump) and Ameya Arun (Weight throw) are also two more athletes looking to break club records at the first time of asking this season.
The growth of the throwing group has made UCCTF into a real force for the coming season, and BU will be the first chance for them to realize their potential.
The excitement will start from the very first event, with multiple athletes competing in both the men’s and women’s 60m hurdles. A standout performer, expected to race around 11:07, is freshman Eric Meade. With a converted 8.84s seed time, he will be challenging for the club record his very first meet. Meade will also show his capabilities in the field later on, as he will also be looking to secure a club record in the high jump (10:30).
In the sprints, the work put in over the winter break means that almost every club record is up for the taking. President Joseph Rychwalski and senior Jon Garcia are contenders for the 60m (12:00) record, along with April Davis. The women’s 200m (1:35) will also be a fantastic watch, with MJ Devivo, Michelle Scott, and Alanna Smith in with a chance of a club record overhaul. As training partners become competitors, it will be a spectacle to see who comes out on top at the first meet of the season.
Freshman Nikolai James will also look to steal the headlines, competing in the 200m (1:55) and the 400m (12:30). After being promoted from the D1 team to UCCTF, it will be a chance to test his mettle against some of the strongest athletes in New England.
Despite it being the first meet of the season, UCCTF will be looking to prove why it will be able to go one better at nationals this year and take home the win. The squad has never been stronger, with talent across grades, genders and events. It is an exciting time to be a Husky, and a scary time to be a Virginian club track team.
